    OLD MELBOURNE GAOL

Australia’s romance with criminals has been quite evident in its folk culture and there is one place that further brings it to the fore is the dark, dank and spooky Old Melbourne Gaol where the city’s most dangerous criminals alongside thieves, debtors, the homeless and mentally ill were locked up.

Step inside one of Melbourne’s oldest buildings and find out what was life for the men and women who lived and died here. The three-story set up with tiny prison cells that held one inmate each presents a daunting picture of the gruesome life the inmates lived.

Today most of the cells have been turned into exhibition rooms displaying death masks and chronicling the lives of gaol’s inmates through letters and news clippings. The focus of the museum is on its most notorious and controversial inmate, Ned Kelly, who was executed here.

About the supplier: City Sightseeing is one of the leading tour operators offering hop-on, hop-off services across 100 locations worldwide. They have been providing quality services since 1998.
